Do Red Light Cameras Help Reduce Auto Accidents?

A 2005 study by the US Dep’t of transportation examined whether red light cameras reduced the amount of accidents.  The study indicates that the red light cameras decreased “right angle crashes” or left turn collisions by 24%.  However the study indicates that the cameras actually increased the number of rear end auto accidents by almost 15%.  This is likely due to drivers’ sudden attempt to stop prior to entering an intersection because of the presents of the camera.  The reality is the safe driver would begin to slow on the yellow light, not speed up.
